Member Spotlight: Jacqueline Brown Smith

Can you please give us a brief introduction of who you are and your current business?

My name is Jackie Brown Smith and I am a project manager at Princeton University in the School of Public and International Affairs focusing on public health inequities, specifically around gun violence and epidemiology. I have adjunct appointments at Duke University School of Nursing and University of Mount Olive. I recently launched a leadership training company called Every Phase Leadership (EPL). It offers resources to women in all phases of their leadership journey. I have a Bachelors in Political Science from UNC Chapel Hill, a double Masters in Health Administration and Organizational Leadership from Pfeiffer University and a Doctorate in Education and Organizational Leadership from Gardner-Webb University. I am married and live in Garner.

Why did you join BPW? I am a returning member of BPW, but I have admired the scholarship opportunities and safe spaces for women! It's a great organization.

What are your favorite hobbies or interests outside of work? I love the arts. My husband is a professional illustrator, so we enjoy travelling and visiting museums and concerts. We also love hiking, going to the beach and visiting parks. I enjoy being an Auntie, so that includes going to sporting events, Frankies and anything that requires sneakers - sign me up! I also enjoy cooking gourmet meals for my family.

What is your favorite super hero and why?

Shuri is the sister of the original Black Panther. Her story after her brother passed, was a story of resilience and triumph. I lost my brother not too long ago, and it unexpectedly strengthened me.

What chores do you hate doing?

Putting up laundry.

What did or do you want to be when you grow up?

Pediatrician.

If you could learn to do anything what would it be?

Draw. I watch my husband, and it's so seamless, but I am the Queen of Stick Figures.

How do you define success?

Waking up everyday and taking a step forward toward your goals is success!

What can BPW do to support you in your career journey?

Continue to offer programming that builds me, and continue to engage and welcome a diverse membership.

Member Spotlight: Altovise Gary, MBA

Can you please give us a brief introduction of who you are and your current business?

I am Alto Gary, and I am a Raleigh native. I grew up in local dance studios and performing magnet programs of Ligon Middle School and Enloe High School. I received my undergraduate degree and MBA from East Carolina University.

My 20+ years professional background is in Sports and Entertainment Marketing, where I developed entertainment programs and collaborated with sponsors in WCW Wrestling, the NBA, and the NFL. I organized two Super Bowl TV appearance events and the halftime for the MLS All-Star Game. I have also created content for Paramount, Turner Broadcasting, MTV, and TBS. Specializing in talent development, I launched the career of Stacy Keibler and worked with World Champion Simone Biles and many other celebrities such as Ric Flair, Vanilla Ice and Bell Biv Devoe.

Why did you join BPW?

I am currently seeking a career change. I joined BPW to get out of my shell and network with other vital businesswomen. I want to learn and see other businesswomen’s perspectives and experiences.

What are your favorite hobbies and interests outside of work?

My favorite hobby and interest outside of work are exercising and relaxing. I know they are the opposite of each other, but that is what interests me. I believe in self-care and personal energy to take care of oneself.

What is your favorite superhero and why?

My favorite superhero is Wonder Woman. I watched the TV shows when I was young, and the combination of her beauty and strength was captivating.

The current movies disappoint me because I would like to see her invisible plane and for her to go off to the side and twirl to change into her suit. I’m nostalgic about this character.

What chores do you hate doing?

I hate folding clothes. I don't know why, but it is the one thing I severely procrastinate on.

There is a machine that folds clothes for the residential consumer, but it costs too much now.

When it gets down to "normal people's price," I will be the first to purchase it.

What did you want to be when growing up?

Growing up, I wanted to be a dancer and choreographer. I did achieve that goal, but I dreamed of taking it further. I fell into the other side of the world of entertainment, and that is management.

I enjoyed being behind the scenes and making moves. I never dreamed that dancing could take me to the different places I have been.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

If I could learn to do anything, it would be carpentry. If I could go back in time and take a woodshop class in high school, my life could be totally different. I enjoy creating things. If I knew then what I know now. I wish I had the skill to make things and update my home myself.

How do you define Success?

I define success as achieving the goals you have set for yourself and to be happy with what you have accomplished no matter how small or big.

Member Spotlight: Katie Connors

Can you please give us a brief introduction of who you are and your current business?

My name is Katie Connors and I currently work for Epic Games supporting the relocation program.
Why did you join BPW?

In one of my prior jobs, I had the chance to watch the BPW/NC History movie that was made by the same mother-daughter team who made Pioneers in Skirts. The film is owned by BPW/NC, under which BPW/Triangle has its charter. It moved me to join this venerable organization.

At first I just attended events, but I’ve seen over the years that the only way to really get the most out of my membership is to volunteer. It’s my activity outside of attending events that has led me to make connections I never would have had otherwise.

What are your favorite hobbies or interests outside of work?

If you talk to me for even one minute it’ll be clear that I love fostering dogs. I’ve been fostering through the Wake County Animal Center’s program since 2016.

I also enjoy stand up paddle boarding, camping, and napping.

What is your favorite super hero and why?

My favorite superhero is probably Deadpool. I like the idea of physically healing faster and enjoy his random dialogue.

What chores do you hate doing?

Vacuuming, but I generally dislike carpet and would rather sweep.

I’m also pretty terrible at starting and putting away laundry.
What did or do you want to be when you grow up?

As a child I wanted to be a veterinarian. Fostering is much easier.
If you could learn to do anything what would it be ?

I regularly consider picking up the violin again. I played a little in high school.
How do you define success?

To me, success is being proud of yourself and what you’ve accomplished.

What can BPW do to support you in your career journey?

BPW has already done so much. When I first joined I was nervous about volunteering but now I see it’s really about what you make of it.

Now BPW is more like a playground for me to test out ideas, think creatively, and practice skills I don’t get at my job. I may not find my next job in this group, but BPW continues to help me make the connections that expand my experiences.

Can you please give us a brief introduction of who you are and your current business?

I am a Navy veteran originally from PA. I moved to NC last year to take a job starting up a Metrology Lab in a brand new Biotech Facility. I have one child – a 25 year old son who lives in Knoxville, TN with his girlfriend, but they are planning a move to NC next year. I also have 4 dogs who made the move from PA with me. I’m a big sports fan – hockey is my favorite but also football and college basketball. I love to travel. Between the Navy and my work, I’ve been to 43 states and over 20 countries. I hope to check the other 7 states off my bucket list one day soon.

Why did you join BPW?

I wanted to meet some new people and find ways to get involved in my new community.

What are your favorite hobbies or interests outside of work?

I like bowling and golf and trying new things.

What is your favorite super hero and why?

It’s probably Batman because I spent so much time watching different versions of him with my son when he was little. I think Christian Bale is my favorite Batman from the movies, but I also have a soft spot for Michael Keaton, being from Pittsburgh.

What chores do you hate doing?

I don’t like dusting or washing windows.

What did or do you want to be when you grow up?

I want to transition into Project Management once I finish my degree later this year.

If you could learn to do anything what would it be?

I always wanted to learn how to play a musical instrument, specifically guitar or piano.

How do you define success?

I think of success as that feeling you get when you’ve accomplished a difficult task or finished a grueling journey.

What can BPW do to support you in your career journey?

I would like to get to know BPW members to learn about their careers and businesses and see where we can support each other.

My name is Jill Badalati and I recently moved to Raleigh from Durango, Colorado to be closer to family. After years of managing and owning my own business, I founded Endurance Within. I'm a Resilience Coach specializing in sound therapy. I work with individuals and group sessions.

Why did you join BPW?

I joined BPW to build friendships and network with like minded women.

What are your favorite hobbies and interests outside of work?
Trail running, cycling, powerlifting. My husband and I love the mountains so we like to load up our gear and two dogs in the campervan and explore.

What is your favorite superhero and why?
I would have to say Wonder Woman as she has great physical, mental and spiritual strength. She uses her strengths as power versus force to help bring out the best in people while being loving and supportive.

What chores do you hate doing?
I grew up on a ranch, so anything that requires a shovel or a rake.

Hi! My name is Jenny Duke and I am a transplant from Tucson, Arizona. My passion is horses and I spent the better part of my life training youth and amateur equestrian competitors. My ex husband and I had a successful show horse training business with 33 World and Reserve World Champions. I am currently a Marketing Specialist for MYCO Medical. I enjoy creating collateral pieces, advertising, budget planning, and organizing logistics for industry tradeshows and corporate events.

· Why did you join BPW?

I joined BPW because I heard the group has a lot of fun and I wanted to get more involved in the community and expand my network.

· What are your favorite hobbies and interests outside of work?

My favorite hobbies these days are gardening, baking and cooking for my friends and neighbors, volunteering, taking my dog for walks, and decorating my home.

· What is your favorite super hero and why?

I would have to say Spider Man because he is quirky and isn't afraid of heights!

· What chores do you hate doing?

I really don't have any chores that I hate to do. I love to decorate for the holidays and I would say that taking down all the decorations and packing everything up is not one of my favorite things to do.

When I was very young I wanted to be a veterinarian; however, as I got older, I wanted to be a CPA.

Can you please give us a brief introduction of who you are and your current business?

My name is Lauren Leggett… I am a North Carolina native, mother and learning and development professional with a focus on the insurance industry.

Why did you join BPW?

I was introduced to BPW by one of my best friends and current member. I view BPW as a way to build connections with other professional women in the triangle and get me outside of my comfort level a bit building connections and networking.

What are your favorite hobbies and interests outside of work?

Some of my favorite hobbies and interests outside of work would have to be spending times with family and friends, shopping, watching college basketball/football, a good brunch and beach day. Wow, I promise I’m not thattttt basic;-)

What is your favorite Super Hero and why?

I would say that my favorite super hero probably has to be my mom. I’m not well versed in all of the ‘true’ superheroes but she is one that I’ve always admired, appreciated, respected and wanted to emulate. She is strong and confident.

What chores do you hate doing?

A chore that I really dislike doing would have to be either putting the laundry away OR washing my car. I love the outcome of both but finding that motivation is rough. BUTTT you put me in front of some dishes and it’s on ;-)

What did you want to be when growing up?

Growing up I wanted to be a meteorologist. I used to go to sleep watching the Weather Channel – weather on the 8’s. This probably lends to my fascination and slight obsession with the weather even today.

If you could learn to do anything what would it be?

If I could learn to do anything, it would likely be having some sort of musical or artistic ability. I admire art and music but give me a paint brush or microphone and you’ll run the other way.

How do you define Success?

I think each individual defines their own success. Success looks very different for many people. For some it’s money, some it’s status, some it’s having children, etc. For me success is better attained in smaller chunks – and for me specifically, sometimes that needs to be daily. Did I speak kindly to myself, did I complete the items on my to- do list, did I do something positive to impact someone else.

What can BPW do to support you in your Business?

BPW can support me/my business by providing a way to connect with other strong professional women not only to grow in my professional development but also in my personal life as well. Hearing tips and tricks and success stories for what has worked for other ladies is a huge reason why I’m here.

I’m Jackie Flynn. I work at MYCO Medical Supplies, Inc. We’re a small but mighty team of people trying to reduce healthcare costs by bringing competition and innovation to healthcare with the products we supply. I lead the supply chain and distribution teams. I work with over 15 global manufacturers of medical devices helping introduce and launch their products in the US Market.

· Why did you join BPW?
I was invited by one of your members (Juwana Hancock) to attend a dinner meeting. The topic was on point, but more importantly, I really enjoyed the interaction. It was an incredible opportunity to listen to women speaking of their experiences in workplace/life that were similar to my own.

· What are your favorite hobbies and interests outside of work?
Right now, all of my free time is devoted to my new puppies, Ferguson & Leonard. I love to read and listen to music.

What is your favorite super hero and why?

Hmmm..that’s tough. I’m going to go with Flash because he can get things done faster and I would love to have that power.

· What chores do you hate doing?
I absolutely cannot do dishes. I can’t stand wet food. I don’t even understand how people put their hands in water with foreign objects floating around in it. That is a superpower.

· What did you want to be when growing up?
A lawyer like Grace Van Owen from LA Law. I still do.

· If you could learn to do anything what would it be?
Really play piano. I still sound like my 14 year old self when I play.

Can you please give us a brief introduction of who you are and your current business?
- My name is Lauren Moock. I work for a property insurance company, serving roles as a project manager and team lead for a claims admin team
Why did you join BPW?
- I joined BPW after my first BPW meeting in 2021. We had our first in person meeting at my office and our CEO emailed out invitations. I really enjoyed the speaker; she spoke on how to handle receiving all types of advice in the workplace. At the end of the meeting, it was mentioned that a social chair position was open, and I thought – “I’m social! I could do that!” and I emailed Leslie the next week and expressed my interest. Here I am today!
What are your favorite hobbies or interests outside of work?
- My absolute favorite hobby and interest outside of work is spending time with my 8-year-old daughter, Nina. We spend our free time outside playing any and all sports, inside making arts and crafts, and cooking together!
What is your favorite super-hero and why?
- Storm from Marvel Comics is my favorite superhero for a couple of reasons. First, she is part of X-men, who fights for equal rights between humans and mutants. Second, Halle Berry did an excellent job playing her role, and Halle Berry is awesome!
What chores do you hate doing?
- Laundry. I hate laundry the most!!!
What did you want to be when growing up?
- Apparently, I wanted to be an actress that wore really fancy dresses. My mom found an old poem of mine from 4^th or 5^th grade where I wrote about how I was going to grow up, become an actress, wear long dresses, and drink from a coffee cup.
If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
- Scuba dive. I’ve travelled a few places and snorkeled, but I think it would be really cool to explore an old shipwreck or something!
How do you define success?
- I believe if I am happy with my present day life, I am successful. I think we so easily define success for something we are seeking or a past accomplishment. Everyone has successful moments and not so successful moments. At the end of the day, if I’m happy with my life, I have success!

My name is Karen McCann. As an experienced IT Program Manager & Agile Scrum Master, I have led teams to develop the latest technologies for over 15 years within small companies, large corporations, and the US government. I am currently networking to discover opportunities to increase the value of IT systems within new organization. My family and I relocated to Raleigh 6 years ago from Washington DC.

Why did you join BPW?

BPW is a dynamic organization where I expect to meet female leaders in new industries in Raleigh/Durham. BPW affords me opportunity to “give-back” by using my vast network of IT professionals, organizational skills, and project management techniques to enhance the group and its agenda.

What are your favorite hobbies or interests outside of work?

Spending time with my family.

What is your favorite super-hero and why?

Wonder Woman as she is a powerful role model for young girls.

What chores do you hate doing?

House cleaning.

What did you want to be when growing up?

An Astronaut.

What do you like to do on your days off?

Go on day trips with my family.

How do you define success?

Success is working with AI technologies in a challenging position that fully utilizes my project management and team building expertise.

Member Highlight: Stephanie Ross

Tell us a bit about yourself, Stephanie!
I'm Stephanie Ross, I'm a certified health educator and health coach, and I'm the owner and founder of Crown Wellness Coaching. I offer integrative health coaching and a lifestyle medicine program. I partner with physicians, corporations, and individuals to help improve health outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.

How have you engaged with BPW so far?
I joined BPW in order to network with other women. You know, before getting into the professional world, I'd been a stay-at-home mom for about 10 years. I built up a really good network there with other moms, but as far as stepping out into the professional world, I didn't really know anybody. So, BPW has been a good way just to help me meet other women; I've participated in some of the networking events so far.

Who has helped you most in your career?
I would say, actually, my husband. He has been really supportive. At the time, I was pregnant and just had a whole lot to keep up with, so he was really good about taking on additional responsibility there. And then, through all of the training for health coaching, he's been really supportive, and certainly in launching the business as well.

What are your hobbies or interests?
I really enjoy reading, so anything, of course, about health and lifestyle medicine. But as far as personal reading, I like mystery novels. My oldest daughter and I actually read Nancy Drew together a lot, so that's fun. I also like Reader's Digest Magazine -- I read that every month. I like traveling as well, when I get the chance... not so much now. And just spending time with family.

Which superpower would you choose?
I would probably say super speed, just because that would let me do some of the mundane things, like cleaning the house, just really fast, so that I could spend more time doing other things.

What's your favorite restaurant or food?
Favorite restaurant for sure is Sassool. It's a Mediterranean restaurant. I usually get a platter with samples of different things. My go-to is called veggie kibbeh. A sweet potato salad, a fava bean salad, and roasted vegetables: that's my favorite combination.

What has been your most interesting job?
I would say what I'm doing now. One of the programs I facilitate called CHIP stands for the complete health improvement program. It's a 10-week intensive lifestyle medicine program. It's holistic, so we cover nutrition, exercise, stress management, sleep, social connection, and substance use. Participants who go through that really see improved health outcomes, and so it's really... I really like being able to share all the information, because it's so comprehensive, and just seeing their participation in it and seeing improved health outcomes.

What can the BPW community do to support you?
I would say just continuing to hold networking events. I really just love to meet other women and we can just bounce ideas off of each other, get to know each other. It's really good relationship building.

Member Highlight: Lauretta (Retz) Reeves

Tell us a little about yourself, Retz!
I am the international portfolio manager for Islamorada Investment Management, and I'm also a wealth manager, helping people manage their finances. I'm also chair of the investment committee of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, which is a scientific grant organization in the Research Triangle.

How have you engaged with BPW so far?
I belonged to the BPW of the Upper Key Century Club for seven years, and that was just such a great experience with making great colleagues and connections in the community, and I missed it a lot. We had the last presentation in Florida, I gave the last presentation in-person, actually, last January, and then we moved to Raleigh last July.

I was missing the BPW so much that I searched to find one that would be in this area, and in the beginning of January, I joined. I've just been in on a couple of the sessions and starting to meet people. I'm very excited about the cross-section, it seems, of the members. I look forward to the fellowship of the group, meeting people in person.

My experience with BPW--and I believe it will translate to the Triangle too--is that it's a diverse group of women, and sometimes men, who represent a whole bunch of different parts of the community, and they're an important part of the community, and that's what I hope to grow to be.

What are your hobbies or interests?
I play piano. I've switched my lessons to Zoom now, but I've been taking lessons for over 12 years. I like to study languages. So--it used to be--I would be traveling a lot overseas and would have to at least get around. When it's warmer, I like to swim and I like to hike in local parks. And read. We have two dogs, and dogs are hobbies and family and part of the family too.

What's your favorite travel spot?
Japan. I actually was supposed to go there for vacation last June but that got postponed. I've been there over 10 times to do research on companies.

I was there during the tsunami and earthquake, the rather large one at the beginning of last decade. And although I always loved going there because of the food and the culture, what really impressed me during that very scary event was the way that the local population not only took care of themselves during a really, really devastating time, but how they actually cared for even people like me to make sure that I was safe and got to where I had to be and to do what I had to do.

So I really, I love the landscape. I love the culture. I love the food. And I hope I get to go back.

What was your favorite TV show growing up?
The Mary Tyler Moore Show. It wasn't just a great comedy, it was the fact that she was a woman taking charge in a business-type situation that was not always kind to women.

What has been your most interesting job?
The one I have now is probably the most interesting, because everything I've done before in finance, I'm using now. It is a 2-person company. I'm doing the international work and the managing partner is doing domestic equities. And I'm doing everything from analyzing stocks and building portfolios to doing trades to talking with clients and putting things in databases. Hopefully traveling again too.

Which superpower would you choose?
Right now, flying. It's socially distanced, when it comes down to it. But it would be really nice to be able to to fly and go to different places. Even if it's just to wave into people's windows, to be able to see people that I haven't seen for a while and miss.

What can the BPW community do to support you?
Like my experience with BPW has been in the past, and I believe it will be in the future, is to become more integrated into the community. I don't know what all is here, I don't know what all the needs are. I think through BPW, I will get to find that out. Not just of financial needs, but about everything from charitable needs to social needs.

It's my experience, again with BPW, is that they're very integrated into the community. And having moved here recently, that's what I would like to have. Holiday Recipes

Cranberry Torte

Ingredients
1 bag of fresh cranberries (about 2.5 cups)
½ c sugar
½ c chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
1 c sugar
1 c flour
½ c melted butter
¼ c melted shortening
2 eggs

Instructions
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease 10” pie pan (or 9x9 square pan). Add berries. Sprinkle with sugar and nuts. Beat eggs, gradually add 1c sugar and blend well. Add flour, butter, and shortening. Mix well. Pour over berries, cook for 1 hr. Top should be nicely browned and a knife inserted comes out clean.

Ingredients
3 1/4 cups crushed vanilla wafers
3/4 cup confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts
3 tablespoons light corn syrup
1/2 cup rum

Instructions
In a large bowl, stir together the crushed vanilla wafers, 3/4 cup confectioners' sugar, cocoa, and nuts. Blend in corn syrup and rum. Shape into 1 inch balls, and roll in additional confectioners' sugar. Store in an airtight container for several days to develop the flavor. Roll again in confectioners' sugar before serving.

Cranberry Orange Bread via Betty Crocker

Ingredients
3 cups fresh or frozen (thawed and drained) cranberries
1 2/3 cups sugar
2/3 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 teaspoons grated orange or lemon peel
4 eggs
3 cups Gold Medal™ all-purpose or whole wheat flour
1/2 cup coarsely chopped nuts
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions
Move oven rack to low position so that tops of pans will be in center of oven. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease bottoms only of 2 loaf pans, 8 1/2x4 1/2x2 inches, or 1 loaf pan, 9x5x3 inches.

Stir together cranberries, sugar, oil, milk, vanilla, orange peel and eggs in large bowl. Stir in remaining ingredients. Pour into pans.

Bake 8-inch loaves 50 to 60 minutes, 9-inch loaf 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes. Loosen sides of loaves from pans; remove from pans and place top side up on wire rack. Cool completely, about 2 hours before slicing. Wrap tightly and store at room temperature up to 4 days, or refrigerate up to 10 days.

Ingredients
1/2 pint bourbon
1 pint heavy cream
4 pints milk
3/4 cup sugar
6 separated eggs
1 tablespoon vanilla
pinch (optional) nutmeg

Instructions
In a bowl beat the egg yolks with the 1/2 cup of sugar until thick. In another bowl beat the egg whites with 1/4 cup of sugar until thick. In a third bowl beat the cream until thick. Add the cream to the yolk, fold in the egg whites, and add the milk, Bourbon, Vanilla, and a pinch of nutmeg if desired. Chill in freezer before serving.

Can you give us a brief introduction of who you are and your current business?

I’m the owner of Smart Moms. We are a recruiting firm where we connect employers to various skilled, professional committed women who want part-time or contract work. I’m a mechanical engineer by training and over 16 years ago, I decided that I didn’t want to build things. I was very interested in helping women build their lives, build well-balanced lives so I made the decision to start Smart Moms.

What prompted you to join BPW and what positions have you held during your tenure with BPW?

In 2011, BPW Raleigh presented me with “Career Woman of the Year.” They did it at the Raleigh chapter and then the state nominated me and told me I was “career woman of the year.” They honored me telling me I had great innovations in creating work-life balance for women and I was really touched by that. I got a chance to meet a lot of women from other BPW chapters and I realized it was a great dynamic group of women. Phenomenal. They were doing advocacy from the state level to the federal level, networking, and the scholarship fund they offer, I was just so impressed. Fast forward five years later, I came to a meeting and was warmly welcomed and decided to join. I sit on the professional development team. I’m one of the individuals that help organize these amazing webinars for women such as self-care, financial wellness, leadership, negotiating skills. I’m just so excited to be part of this group!

What hobbies do you have outside of work?

I love to read. I’m an avid reader. The last ten years I’ve been reading a lot of business books. Quite a few of our members have written their own books so I read those. I also fish. My husband and I fish in the spring and summer at Jordan Lake and Falls Lake. I love to travel so I’ve been to Miami and Puerto Rico and trying to go to Ibiza in May, but my husband doesn’t know yet.

What was the best concert you ever attended?

Pat Metheny. He’s a fusion jazz guitarist who I got introduced to in my high school days. He came to the Carolina Theater in Durham and I got a chance to get great seats. He has this mechanical orchestra which he created and plays along with his band. It was just an amazing concert.

What are you passionate about?

Work-life balance for women is so important to me. My mom at the age of 49 had her first stroke. She was single parent raising two children, a homeowner, a DC public school teacher. She had two side hustles at the same time. I really believe if she had opportunities like being able to be remote or flexible hours, she might not have had a stroke so early. I have been committed the last 16 years help women negotiate work life balance, or connect with employers who have it, or create their own opportunities.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be and why?

I’ve always wanted to do those long hiking treks. Climb Mount Kilimanjaro or climb the Appalachian trail but I’m scared of bears. I think if I had someone teach me how to survive in the wild then I would go one of these trips.

What are you currently watching on Netflix or TV or any streaming services?

In December, I just got finished watching “Greenleaf” on Netflix which is a saga about an African American mega-church family that has drama, they create drama, they live in drama, but it has a Christian twist and I enjoyed watching it.

Which four individuals, living or dead, would you like to eat dinner with the most?

Michelle Obama for sure. I love her persona, who she is. Iylania Vanzant, she’s had a motivational speaker with a couple TV shows. She’s a minister and tells it like it is and she’s so clear which is why I have a couple questions I’d like to ask her. Octavia Butler, who’s a science fiction writer. She’s no longer with us, but she’s Black and she combined science fiction with Black spirituality and came up with amazing storylines. I would love to sit with her and ask her, “How did you come up with this stuff?” And lastly, Meryl Streep. I love her. She’s had a long-standing career, been married for a long time, had children and seems very grounded.

What is your favorite family tradition?

Going home. I have two daughters that are 18 and 20. For 20 years, we’ve put them in a car with pillows, blankets, games and snacks. We traveled to Tylertown, Mississippi, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Seabrook, Maryland to see their grandparents. When we get there, it’s always a lot of fun. We see family, we eat good food and it’s hard when we leave. But we leave with a heart full of love. I love going home.

What can BPW do to support you in your career?

Smart Moms is making a push to connect with as many principals in law firms as possible. We have very talented women who are attorneys that can work remote for any of the offices. We have paralegals, bookkeepers, assistants, HR support for recruiting. I’m really hoping that BPW will make introductions to law firms so we can get more women to work for them.

Meet Alexa Colasurdo

Can you give us a brief introduction of who you are and what you do at your current organization?

My name is Alexa Colasurda and I’m a data scientist at SAS. I’m on the JMP team, and I support marketing and sales teams by making reports, predictive models and everything in between.

Why did you join BPW?

I think it was exactly a year ago that I was really seeking a tribe. I had a lot of failed networking group attempts, tried some events on Meetup which turned out to be really awkward, etc. But then I found the “Beyond the Boys Club” political panel that BPW hosted last year, with Deborah Ross, Janet Cowell, and Tamara Barringer and I ended up coming to that and was just so inspired. I found that this was a group of really passionate, driven women, which was refreshing. Everyone is very inspiring, self-aware and just cheers each other on. To have all of that in one room was really exciting, so I decided I had to join.

What hobbies/interests do you have outside of work?

My husband and I have his and hers 4-wheelers, so we like to go 4-wheeling. We also have his and hers kayaks, and I enjoy yoga and spending time with my cat.

If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing that you would do?

So this may seem really boring, but I would put it in a very conservative fund and try to be a responsible adult. I may also get a hot tub… but probably just the former.

What is the best thing that happened to you within the past couple of months?

Well I got married, so that was great. And professionally, I’m really excited because I just submitted an abstract for a client summit in Europe next year, to present a paper. So fingers crossed that works out!

Who is your favorite super hero and why?

This is a hard one because I don’t watch anything with superheroes in it, so I don’t really know many of them. I want to say Wonder Woman because she’s a bada** and she’s a woman. But the only superhero movie I’ve actually watched is Ironman 3, partly because I found out that they filmed part of it at SAS so I wanted to watch it for that reason. Ironman was actually pretty cool. So either Ironman or Wonder Woman would be my favorite.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

My biggest pet peeve is when women (especially younger women) apologize for things that don’t require an apology. I always try to address this with younger women, especially those who I’ve mentored, because when you apologize it sets you up to be inferior (when you’re not), especially if you’re the only woman in the room. So please, don’t apologize unless you’ve actually done something wrong!

What is your favorite game/board game?

I really love fantasy football. I’m one of 2 women in our fantasy football league at work and I actually run the league.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I really want to learn how to DJ. Not like a wedding DJ, but more like Steve Aoki, DJ-ing a festival with hundreds of thousands of people. I think that would be super rad.

What can BPW do to support you in your career?

Continuing the dinner meetings every month, and continuing to connect this group of women with our speakers, who are always other inspiring women in this area that we can learn from. It’s awesome that BPW gives us a place month to month that we can gather. It’s a great way to keep up the networking and a way to continue developing friendships with each other.

Can you give us a brief introduction of who you are and what you do at your current organization?

My name is Leslie Lemmons. I am a Financial Services Officer at State Employee’s Credit Union in Apex, NC. I help the families of the State of North Carolina reach other financial objectives. I assist members in various services ranging from budgeting, debt consolidation to mortgage loan servicing. I hope in the future to be more instrumental in helping the membership with their investment and estate essential planning needs.

Why did you join BPW?

I wanted to be apart of a fostering empowering group of women that want to help advance each other to become their very best in their organization. The connections that I make will help me to network and give me the tools to succeed career wise both inside and outside the office. In the future, I my hope is to become more of the mentor that shares her attributes to BPW membership that shares the common drive to grow daily beyond where they are today.

What hobbies/interests do you have outside of work?

Fitness and living a happy healthy lifestyle. Currently, I am obtaining my group fitness certification through Athletic Fitness Association of America. I am obtaining the certification to be able to a group fitness instructor for a fitness club. I am passionate about giving knowledge and aiding someone to better themselves in wellness. I have been able to reap the benefits of being healthy and it has paid off for my quality of life substantially. I think that paying that forward to others like Kim does is the best way to have personal gratification at night when you lay your head on your pillow. I also enjoy any activity that aids in personal development and self-motivation.

If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing that you would do?

First, I would thank the Lord by giving a good faith tithe. Secondly, I would give to my family and provide for their needs. Thirdly, I would give a good portion to a faith-based organization like St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital. I would then give a healthy portion to an organization that empowers women professionally AKA BPW!

What is the best thing that happened to you within the past couple of months?

Joining BPW for sure! In the past couple weeks alone I have had the opportunity to meet and build so many impact relationships like Emily McIntosh & Jeanie Chang who helped me start a foundational basis for how to plug in and who to meet and greet to make an impact that I am passionate about for BPW. Emily was the one who introduced me to Rachel Pisciotta from Arbor Wealth Management and Kim Vanderheijden. Because of BPW I have been able to network with Rachel and Kim to help aid and organize events for the association. Rachel and I are currently planning a Financial Q&A in person event within the next month touching on wealth management & estate essential planning.

What is your favorite place to travel to and why?

Disney by far! Disney has been my best vacation destination experience ever! I had the pleasure of staying at the Port Olean’s in the Summer of 2017. The fast passes and extra magic hours were amazing! Best part was visiting the Beauty in the Beast Castle Dining Hall because you could eat in the palace, library reading room or the ‘Forbidden West Wing.’ I also enjoyed the ‘Story Time with Belle’ and ‘Ariel at her Grotto’ experience. Additionally, I enjoy traveling to Dollywood in Tennessee at Christmas time for the Christian faith based phenomenal experience that the park exudes.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

I really don’t have many that I can think of. I sometimes see pet peeves as a way not to get along in society, therefore, I always try the live by the Kenny Chesney song “Get Along” to be best I can.

What is your favorite game/board game?

Operation because it teaches you patience. I have the patience to sit there and dissect the subject’s intestines i.e. bone, cheese, ice cream, etc. I have an edge because I have a lot of patience as a personality characteristic. I always approach things from the aspect how can I make this work, how can I approach this situation getting that gold nugget without causing the buzzer to go off or without the garbage hitting the fan? I have a philosophy in life that I want things for members/clients to go as smoothly and seamless as possible without bumps to the extent they can. (Life is not always this way, but one can dream) I believe Operation teaches you to have that philosophy. I also enjoy Jenga where you build the towers with the log blocks, another way to demonstrate persistence, patience and determination to get where you headed without the tower failing on you.

What has been your most interesting job and why?

I was telling Kim I had a short-lived interesting job as a Beachbody coach where I used Facebook as a motivational platform for my Clean Eating Dream Team and my Happy Healthy Fit by Leslie fan page. Through these forums I promoted the Beachbody products like Shakeology and endorsed different fitness exercise programs like Piyo. I found out that I could motive people and encourage them and they in turn could motive others with their posts as well. I gave them hope to eat well and exercise daily. Though I wasn’t the top seller of Beachbody products, I learned that the self-gratification element was enough to sustain me than the actual income this job generated.

What can BPW do to support you in your career?

BPW is a forum for its members to network and build upon each other in a positive and empowering way. I approach BPW as your only going to get as much out of the association as you put in. So, I have resolved to dive in and give 120% to this wonderful group of professional women that all have an Alicia Key’s “Girl on Fire” attitude. Emily McIntosh has helped me to envelop a few ambitions professionally speaking that needs polishing. I am right on the cusp of realizing the Senior Officer role at SECU. I am trying to bloom into the type of leader that my organization will define as indisposable i.e. hard to replace. I am seeking out additional responsibilities and opportunities for growth i.e. investment certification, trust officer. I also believe BPW can support me through mentorship and guidance to get through the rigor of obtaining my MBA. Currently, I am applying online to UNC@MBA and need all the support and advice I can to know what to expect as an upcoming graduate student.

Can you give us a brief introduction of who you are and what you do in your current organization?

My name is Lauren, I moved here to the Triangle about a year ago from south-central Pennsylvania. My background is in graphic design, and I currently work in marketing at Oxford University Press.

Why did you join BPW and what positions have you held during your tenure with BPW?

After moving here, I didn’t know a single person. I was going to a lot of different networking events, just going anywhere to try to find something that was a fit, but nothing really stuck. The day beforehand, I found out about the BPW panel that consisted of 3 female politicians from North Carolina. And I moved here from a place where no one really pays much attention to civic engagement or anything like that, so as soon as I came here I knew this was “the one”!

What hobbies/interests do you have outside of work?

I used to kickbox – that was really fun! I’d like to get back to that at some point. Recently my husband and I made it a goal to visit every professional baseball stadium in the state. We’ve been to 2 so far!

Who is your favorite superhero and why?

Quick funny story first: When the Avengers came out a few months ago, my coworkers knew I hadn’t seen it and they were very nice and tried to tiptoe around spoilers. And I had to tell them, listen, I’m like 19 movies behind… so don’t even worry about it! Just not my thing.

So anyway, my favorite “superhero” is a little unconventional, but I’m going to go with Hermione from Harry Potter. She’s clever, she’s determined… and I think she’s the first character to really get the big picture and to fight for the idea that no one is free unless everyone is free.

What chore do you absolutely hate doing?

Dishes.

What would you do for a career if you were not doing what you are doing now?

I always wanted to design for a professional sports team. That didn’t quite turn out, but I was really lucky to spend my first few years after school in a job I loved with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. I’d be interested in working for an environmental agency again someday. Part of my job was designing and publishing a quarterly magazine, so I’m interested, too, in getting a feel for the magazines around town and one day designing for one of them.

How do you define success?

I would define success as “never settling”. One of my favorite quotes (I’m not sure who to give credit to for it… I actually saw it on a sign on the side of the road) is “all I want to be is someone who makes new things and thinks about them”.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

Learn another language—maybe Italian—or play an instrument.

What has been your most interesting job and why?

I worked at DNR between the time I graduated college and when I ended up here. That was great because I got to do a lot of different things for something I really care about. I was the graphic designer, and also did some marketing, some writing; just a whole bunch of different stuff. One thing I’ll never forget, though, was early one spring I got to go along for a bear den survey. The biologists sedated the mama bear to do a health check and make sure the batteries on her tag were good. In the meantime I got to hold and keep one of the cubs warm, which was just so sweet!

What can BPW do to support you?

Just keep existing. I love events like this. Like I said, I didn’t know a single person when I moved here and it’s just been really great getting to know everyone!

2019-2020 President's Message

To our returning members, welcome to another great year with BPW! To our new members, welcome to BPW/Triangle and thank you for joining!

We are thrilled and humbled to serve as your co-Presidents for the BPW year 2019-2020. But we absolutely could not do this alone. We have a wonderful team of diverse volunteers serving on our board this year, who are deeply dedicated to ensuring that BPW/Triangle brings you valuable, fun, and meaningful programming. These women are here to bring to life this organization’s mission: to develop a powerful network of leaders to advocate, educate, and cultivate connections.

2019 is a momentous year for BPW/Triangle. 100 years ago, in June 1919, a small group of women from across North Carolina met in Charlotte, at which time they first organized the NC Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs. Their mission was to support women in their professional endeavors at a time when women did not yet have the right to vote. Since that time 100 years ago, BPW chapters in North Carolina and around the world, including here in the Triangle, have continued to cultivate leaders in business, as well as leading the charge in advocating for legislation that assists women in obtaining economic equity, health, and civil rights. We look forward to celebrating our 100 years of history this year and to planning for what the next century will look like for this organization.

As we kick off the 2019-2020 year, we renew our focus and objectives on quality over quantity; on providing well-known speakers who address the interests, needs, and desires of our members; on growing our membership to reach an increasing number of like-minded women; and on expanding the chapter’s scholarship program so that we can support more well-deserving women in our community who wish to further their education.

We are thrilled to be serving as Team President for our chapter and looking forward to meeting and getting to know many of you at our events over the next many months. Cheers to a fantastic year!

MEET MEMBER: Dilek Austin

Can you give us a brief introduction of who you are and your current business?

My name is Dilek Austin. I work for a company called Novozymes as a scientist, which produces industrial enzymes. All of you are using the enzymes in your household products. Even enzymes are in our bodies so they are natural things. My background is in food engineering and food science. Therefore, I work in the food division, especially on baked goods. So, the next time you buy a sliced bread, ask yourself how come the bread is still soft for a long time, that is because of the enzymes.

Why did you join BPW and what committee are you part of?

Last summer I read a book You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero. When I was reading one of the chapters, I saw something that related to me. She knew she needed to do something for herself but she didn’t know what it was, and someone recommended for her to join any women’s club in her area about business or interpersonal development. She said it was the best thing she did and she figured out what she really wanted to do with her life. That’s how I found BPW, via the website. Then I connected with one of you, I think I sent an email, and was introduced to Payal and it went from there. Payal was the biggest impact on me joining.

Who is a person who has helped you in your career and how have they helped you?

It’s cliche, but my mom and my dad. Because my mom grew up in an era when women weren’t educated and it wasn’t believed that women should be educated. I’m originally from Turkey. My dad had a college degree, an engineer. We are three girls and he always pushed us to be the best of ourselves and not to depend on men. So my mom wanted better things for us. All of us became engineers -. In fact, one thing about my dad was he always told us, “I cannot give you a bunch of money, houses, cars but when you have a good education, this is a golden bracelet for you for the rest of your life.” So that I think my parents are the main pushers in my career.

What hobbies/interests do you have outside of work?

I don’t know if this is a hobby, but I became a member of a Toastmasters club 3 years ago. It is very much like your group here, but with XY chromosomes and XX chromosomes together. I really enjoy that. I like to listen to public speaking and how people can develop themselves in public speaking. Seeing people how they develop in front your eyes with the support and guidance they get is amazing feeling.

I am so crazy about crocheting. I have to crochet every night. I find it very relaxing. One of the reasons I like technology is that I don't have my mom with me to teach me more patterns, but I can still learn from online. It's why I am so grateful about technology. I can just go learn things.

Another hobby, of course, is reading books, specifically personal and professional development books. Because of a book, I am part of BPW.

If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?

This is the best question ever because I always tell my kids, if I had a power right now, I would like to stop all the cruelty. Human to human, human to animals right away. It really hurts my heart to see that. It's why most of the time, I refuse to watch the news.

What’s your favorite place of all the places you’ve traveled?

I want to say Turkey. I do travel but I was born there and I really recommend considering traveling to Turkey. There's so many amazing places and so many different cultures in there. I travel to other places of the world, but still I feel like Turkey is a very beautiful country.

What is your favorite restaurant and why?

I don't have a favorite restaurant. I love to try different things. Especially for a restaurant, it has to have a feeling. I just don't like the fancy restaurants. It has to have some colors, like a Latino type restaurant or Mexican type. I just love that vivid feeling when you enter. It's the feeling I'm looking for actually.

What was your favorite TV show or movie when growing up and why?

Growing up in Turkey, everything we see on the TV is almost 20 years after you guys. Growing up, I watched Dallas. Interestingly, I ended up marrying a Texan. It was interesting to go visit the ranch in Texas where the series was done. But my favorite show is Charlie's Angels. I like kickass and strong women. It's why I really loved that show.

What has been your most interesting job and why?

The job I'm doing right now. I get to visit different places and interact with different people to help them with their challenges in the industry. At the same time, being able to help with my education through them is really rewarding feeling. I really love to help, teach and learn. I'm a lifelong learner. Whenever I chat with people I will look for learnings form them. The more I give, the more I learn from other people.

What can BPW do to support you in your career?

I love listening to podcasts. I always feel like I need to be productive every second of my life. It's just me. I started listening to this podcast, "Hello Monday." I highly recommend it for business and professional women. I’m pretty sure many of you are very ambitious. The fact that you come to this dinner meetings after work, which shows some dedication. I feel like I can align with you and learn from you and help BPW.

MEET MEMBER: Jami Yazdani

Can you give us a brief introduction of who you are and your current business?

My name is Jami Yazdani and I was in higher education for about 15 years and I recently relocated here. I started a leadership management consulting business so I would like to be helping clients solve management problems, develop leadership skills, and build their administrative toolkits. The services I offer are coaching, training, and facilitation.

Why did you join BPW and what committee are you part of?

I’ve been involved in other women’s organizations so when I moved here I googled “women’s organizations near me” or something like that. I found BPW and joined. I think I’m on the marketing committee. The thing that was funny about that is I just joined, saw an event, I thought it was about marketing or business, I showed up, and it was the marketing committee meeting. So now I help with the BPW Instagram account! But I feel very welcome and they were happy to put me to work. Yeah, I thought I was coming to something completely different.

Who is a person who has helped you in your career and how have they helped you?

I have been really lucky that I’ve had lots of people who have helped me in my career. But the person who always sort of comes to mind is a former supervisor of mine when I was at Northern Virginia Community College. She was just such a great supervisor. She was wonderful and encouraging. After I left NOVA and after she retired, she still sends me amazing emails. Every now and then, “How are you doing? What’s going on?” And when I tell her, she’s always like, “That’s so awesome! You’re doing so great!” And so she’s just so encouraging. Her name is Carol and I often say, “What would Carol do?”

What hobbies/interests do you have outside of work?

I’m a big reader. I like to cook. I like to travel when I can. That’s really all I can think of. I’m not a big hobby person. I’m too much of a perfectionist to actually do crafts or anything.

If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?

I would love to be able to sort of beam myself somewhere. You know, like kind of, “Scotty! Beam me up!” Because I would save so much travel time. Even though I enjoy a good road trip, if I could sort of be at Target and then be at home, then get to a meeting, that would be amazing.

What’s your favorite place of all the places you’ve traveled?

That’s kind of a tricky one. My husband and I, when I graduated with my second masters, went to Curacao to sort of celebrate. We were there for five days and somehow they had two national holidays during the five days we were there so everything was closed and we couldn’t go on excursions, so we just sat on the beach and at the swimming pool. It was the best vacation but I think it’s because we did nothing.

What is your favorite restaurant and why?

This one is hard. I don’t have a favorite restaurant. I like trying restaurants. I’ll eat most any cuisine. I don’t have a favorite restaurant. Erin (Cannon) had recommended Full Moon Oyster Bar and I went there the other night. That was really, really good. I guess I could recommend that but I don’t have a favorite.

What was your favorite TV show or movie when growing up and why?

This was also hard because I watched a lot of TV as a kid, but I remember really liking Growing Pains. I think I also watch Golden Girls but I still watch that as an adult, actually. I was watching it this morning and I think I enjoy it more as an adult. Movie-wise, I enjoy Goonies and Star Wars. I watched Adventures in Babysitting like a thousand times, and I didn’t even babysit. So I’m not sure what that was about.

What has been your most interesting job and why?

I think all of my jobs in higher ed were really interesting, sometimes because they were challenging. But I’ve often had jobs where I had to do a lot of things and I really like doing a lot of different things. A job that was kind of interesting, that’s not on my LinkedIn profile or my resume, when I got out of undergrad, I thought I wanted to be an archeologist so I did my field school and for a couple of months I worked for a cultural resources management firm on a dig. That was super interesting. I realized it wasn’t what I wanted to do. Even though it was fun, I needed to be around people more - which was a good thing to realize - but it was really interesting.

What can BPW do to support you in your career?

So because I have a new business, of course, I would love clients and to network with people. But I’m new to the area so I also would just like to meet people and make friends. And I am in a career transition so I’m open to all kinds of opportunities. I think learning what people do and what’s out there would be most helpful.

MEET MEMBER: Marcy stahl

Can you give us a brief introduction of who you are and your current business?

I’m Marcy Stahl, I’m a business coach for women entrepreneurs and women in direct sales.

Why did you join BPW and what positions have you held during your tenure with BPW?

I moved from the DC area five years ago, and I was doing a lot of women’s networking up there, and as soon as I got here I was like, “Where are my people? I need to Google ‘women’s networking groups Raleigh.’” I found BPW and from the first meeting, I was just like, okay, this is my tribe, these are my people, I’m in the right place. So I joined actually pretty quickly after the state conference that year, which was fascinating hearing more of the history of the organization which has been such an advocate for women’s rights. We sometimes take our rights for granted but it’s very recent that we got those rights. So I’m a big fan of that.

I was the Membership chair for a while and then I think right into the Co-Presidency. I think I skipped the Co-President Elect. Now I am the chair of the Scholarship committee.

What hobbies/interests do you have outside of work?

Yeah, that’s something I’m looking to fertilize and grow this year. Outside work, I definitely do a ton of reading, I have two rescue cats that take up a fair chunk of time, time with friends, and I’m a big lover of film and live music - and that’s something I want to be doing more of. Those are probably my main things.

If you could sit on a bench in a beautiful woods, who would you like sitting next to you on the bench and why?

What an open ended question with so many different options. So what about family? No. Friends? Maybe. Boyfriend? I’m not dating. So I circled back around to friends. One of my friends who lives in Montana and is a nature guide would be the perfect person to be sitting with because he and I love being together and he could tell me about everything around us in the forest.

What was your favorite TV show when growing up and why?

The “why” part may be harder to reflect back on and figure out. When I was young, I was super intrigued by the first Batman show. And then when I was a teenager, I would say Saturday Night Live.

What has been your most interesting job and why?

Define interesting. For sure it’s been being self-employed. I feel like that is the biggest personal growth journey you can pick. From the outside, it looks like, “Oh! You get to have control over your own schedule! Blah blah blah.” But it’s really an inner journey because it forces you out of your comfort zone every day of the week. So being an entrepreneur, for me, is my favorite job.

What’s your favorite place of all the places you’ve travelled?

Tasmania! Probably Australia overall is my favorite place and being on this little island off of Australia with amazing scenery and incredible food, it was so fantastic!

And the thing that cracked me up is that Australians love meeting Americans and asking you where you’re from and what places in Australia you’re going to visit. And every time I said, “I’m going to Tasmania”, they were like, “Oh, that’s where senior citizens go.” So it was dorky at the time, but I loved it.

What book, movie read/seen recently you would recommend and why?

I am having a great time recommending this book, “In the Company of Women” by Grace Bonney. The author, who is a photographer, interviewed 100 different women who are all creative types. They’re everything from interior designers to writers to visual artists. She has beautiful photographs of them in their studio, in their space. Just to be able to see what they’ve got—the odds and ends, the pictures, everything—is fantastic. And she asks them great questions like, “the best lesson you’ve learned in your business”, “the mistake that you learned the most from.” And she asked something about advice, like good advice that you got or good advice that you ignored. She’s super inclusive in terms of the kind of women that she profiles so I highly recommend this book, and I highly recommend it in hardback and in full color.

What’s your favorite tradition or holiday?

Probably Thanksgiving. You know, just the 100% focus on food.

What can BPW do to support you in your career?

Probably the easiest thing is if you know of other women’s networking groups that use outside speakers, that is a great thing for me to be connected to. It’s always harder I think to talk to people about who is my ideal client and how do you know that they’re my ideal client. So speaking engagements, that’s the easiest thing.

Can you give us a brief introduction of who you are and your current business?

I moved to Raleigh a year and a half ago from Seattle and previously lived in the Florida Keys. I am currently working for DH Griffin Wrecking in their Raleigh Division. My previous work background ranges from a retail manager, flight attendant, financial aid advisor at a university, massage therapist, spa director, legal assistant /office manager. My work life has not been very dull.

Why did you join BPW and what positions have you held during your tenure with BPW?

I had previously attended BPW meetings in the Florida Keys and when I moved here I was looking for a group of like-minded women. I would say the deciding factor for me was when I was on our website and I saw the t-shirt "Inspired by my Tribe" I knew I was making the right decision. I am currently on the social committee.

What hobbies/interests do you have outside of work?

I enjoy hiking, my Orangetheory workouts and finding great places to eat in Raleigh and Durham.

What was the best concert you ever attended?

On the Sunset Pier in Key West, I saw Galactic with Trombone Shorty and the Blues Travelers. Two different concerts, same location.

What are you passionate about?

My passions are traveling and moving to new cities. My sisters affectionately call me Bedouin - I like to call it wanderlust.The "moving to new cities" is currently off the books since I just purchased my first home - ever - in Brier Creek. I am constantly looking for new countries to visit - my current list of places to go to is New Zealand, Thailand, Vietnam, and Croatia.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done (that you can share)?

With less than 6 weeks of preparation I hiked across northern Spain on the Camino de Santiago for over a month. Needless to say, living 7 feet above sea level on a very flat island in the sunshine state did not prepare me very well for crossing the Pyrenees.

What are you currently watching on Netflix or TV?

I just recently finished bingeing the Australian show "Offspring" on Netflix

Which four individuals, living or dead, would you like to eat dinner with the most?

Dave Chappelle and Tina Fey - to laugh, Gene Kelly - to teach me to dance and Linda Carter because duh - she's Wonder Woman!

What is your favorite family tradition?

My parents do not do it anymore but for Greek Easter my dad would roast a whole lamb in our backyard. It is quite an ordeal because you have to start early in the morning and, before we had a machine to turn the goat, the men would dig a hole, start the coals and manually rotate the lamb while drinking ouzo. Now while this is happening - all your family starts to arrive and you are eating a drinking all day long. If you close your eyes and imagine My Big Fat Greek Wedding....that's exactly what it is like. Growing up in Queens you always knew where all the Greeks lived during Easter especially if it was raining because you would see blue tarps everywhere.

What can BPW do to support you in your career?

I do not think BPW needs to do anything but be there. I like knowing that I have women that I can talk to and ask questions. I also hope they feel comfortable to tell me if I walk out of the bathroom with my skirt stuck in my hose and can laugh about it with me.

On The Move: A New Opportunity for Karen Boardman

You’ll hear it over and over again when you ask someone why they joined BPW, “I joined for the people.” And it’s true. BPW of the Triangle is an incredibly supportive network of ladies. When you attend meetings, there are certain familiar faces who are always there to greet you and make you feel welcome. BPW fosters a warm environment of encouragement and camaraderie. It’s always exciting to hear when one of the members gets an opportunity to move on to bigger and better things. Though, it’s definitely bittersweet when their business journey takes them away from the Triangle.

I wanted to take a moment to highlight one of our long time members, Karen Boardman. Karen has recently accepted a position with Sellers, Ayers, Dortch & Lyons, P.A, a law firm in Charlotte, NC. While we’re very excited for Karen and her new opportunity, we’re definitely going to miss her!

Karen has been a member of BPW for the last 6 years, and if you’ve been to a BPW meeting recently, then you’ve no doubt seen her around, greeting you as you check-in. During her time with BPW, she’s served as both the Social Chair, and has fulfilled the role of Treasurer for the last two and a half years (doing an incredible job keeping us all on track)!

I got a chance to ask Karen about her upcoming transition. She said it was funny, because she wasn’t actively looking for a change, but a friend of hers brought the open position to her attention. It turned out to be a perfect fit!

Karen will be continuing her work in corporate matters and estate planning, but she’ll also be able to bring in her experience with trademark and copyright law. In fact, thanks to Karen, this is the first time that Sellers Ayers will be able to offer these kinds of services. So if you know anyone in the Charlotte area who’s looking for legal advice, be sure to send them Karen’s way.

She will also have the opportunity to become a partner within one year, which wasn’t an option at her old practice.

Not only is this a great move for Karen’s career, but she’ll be also closer to her family. She’s going to miss the Triangle, but she’s looking forward to new adventures in Charlotte!

“It’s hard for me to put into words what being a part of BPW/Triangle has meant to me for the last 6 years. I leave every dinner meeting, board meeting, and social event feeling empowered by the truly extraordinary women who comprise this group. Can you give us a brief introduction of who you are and your current business?

My name is Cyn Macgregor and I live in North Raleigh with my husband and my mother. He and I have four children together. We have three girls: one in San Francisco, one in Brooklyn, and one in Knoxville. And one son also in Knoxville. I have been a business owner for the majority of my work life. My business Brand & Book is focused on helping business owners build their brand and publish a book and Cyn Macgregor Art creates original, often abstract artwork that elevates your spirit, enhances your living spaces and inspires you, at work or at home.

Why did you join BPW and what positions have you held during your tenure with BPW?

Because my mother told me to! It’s true. When my mom, Irma, moved to the area 10 years ago she searched for a networking group to help her business. She went searching around town and after visiting this group she found BPW to be very warm and welcoming. And then she said, “You should join too!” And so I did. I’ve been in this group for about 10 years, I guess. I have held positions in marketing, programs, and I was President for the 2014-2015 year.

What hobbies/interests do you have outside of work?

I live in a community that has a community garden. I love it. It used to be a tennis court and was converted to a garden. I like to “try” to grow vegetables in my little five-by-five raised bed. It’s a nice comforting spot to be. I also like to make Kombucha. It’s a kind of brewed fermented tea is supposedly good for your gut. It’s healthy but it’s kind of an icky looking bacteria. And it’s delicious! I also write and produce movies with my filmmaker/actor husband. Our recent award-winning movie “Katie’s Dog” premiered at Peak City International Film Festival and will screen November 21, 2018 at Carborro Film Festival.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see cast as you?

Caitriona Balfe. You might know her as Claire Fraser, ya know married to Jamie Fraser in Outlander. I really love her spirit and determination and I love how she is living in the past and present at the same time. Although she knows the future, she cannot change it. It must be frustrating. Plus we’re both Scots. She’s my kin somewhere. I think she could probably play a better me!

What did you want to be when growing up?

I have a little story about this. They say you can know your true self by looking at the 10 year old version of yourself. For me, that was travel, painting, making friends, and being in awe of the Universe. That was my 10 year old self. And that year, the first man set foot on the moon. My family took a long road trip to California. That was also the year that my mother said, “No, it is not appropriate for the boys to climb inside your bedroom window.” And also I did my first abstract painting. When I was a little older, I dreamed of being either a photographer for National Geographic or creative director for a fancy NYC magazine.

What do you like to do on your days off?

I like to explore. Walkabouts. Visit new places. Play with my Nikon camera. Contribute to the creative community. Change the world.

Where would you like to go on a dream vacation?

Maldives. It’s located in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sri Lanka. I love the idea of being in a luxe hut on top of crystal blue water, with air conditioning and a wet bar of course!

How do you define success?

The ability to work on projects that make your heart sing, without worry of money or time, with some of recognition. I want to share, also, my sweet husband is one of those guys who leaves little notes and cards every now and then. And today was one of those days. Inside the card, part of what he wrote was appropriate so I thought I’d share: “Success is not about what's in bank accounts but about what's in a person’s soul.” I thought it was really sweet. So I’m going with both of those things.

What is your favorite food?

Toast.

What can BPW do to support you in your career?

Oh, BPW has already given me so much support. Like I said, it’s been 10 years so I have met some amazing women. I have found great friends and business associates. If you find you need something, you have a group that is ready to help you if they can. The ladies in this group support me by asking how they can help and by being open to helping me when I ask. As a solopreneur, finding new clients is an ongoing process. Currently, I am looking for contacts in two areas: (1) business people who are subject matter experts and wish to publish a book as part of their marketing strategy and (2) interior designers who are looking to build relationships with artists who provide artwork and decor. us a brief introduction of who you are and what you do at your current organization.

My name is Olivia Scarbrough. I am from Greenville, North Carolina originally and then I went to Ole Miss so I was in Mississippi in that area for about 5 years and then out of college. I moved to Memphis, and I lived in Memphis for 3 years and then last July my husband and I moved back here to be closer to family. I am a CPA with a regional accounting firm. I do tax work mostly with closely-held businesses and I sort of recently narrowed my focus down to construction and real estate.

Why did you join BPW?

I joined BPW as a way to stay involved with the community and to try to find a way to give back to the community. I was involved with some young professional type stuff when I was in Memphis and so when I moved here, I was doing some Googling and researching and that sort of thing. And then I had a really good conversation with Donna and Allison and decided this would be a good fit for me.

What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?

Wine. My husband and I, we like to hike and we’ve been doing a bunch of state parks in the area. And we have two dogs so they go with us and get some of that energy out. I love to be on the water. My parents have a house on the river in little Washington. So anything by the water - the beach, the mountains - anything. Anything water related, I’m there.

If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you would do?

My husband and I discussed this the other night before the big drawing because we had a pool at work, but I think the first thing I would probably do is give a bunch of money to the two rescues that we got our dogs from. They’re awesome organizations. One’s here: Cause for Paws. And one is in Memphis. So I would probably just try to do something for them first… and then I’d probably go make some other bad decisions.

What is the best thing that happened to you within the past couple of months?

You’ve already heard about my dogs, but at one point I only had one and my husband and I got one after we kinda got settled here in Raleigh. We rescued a 3-and-a-half year old… I’m not sure what he is really… but his name is Sampson and he’s been the perfect addition to our family, because we’re not ready for human children. And I couldn’t really narrow it down to one because that was a really great thing and I also found out earlier this year that I was gonna be an aunt. My brother and his wife are expecting a little boy in January.

What is your favorite superhero and why?

So my husband says I had no childhood because I was not into cartoons and movies and I was an outside kid. I guess it’s a little unconventional but I would have to say my mom. She’s pretty awesome so if I can be half the person she is, I think that’d be pretty good.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

There’s a lot, but being in taxes I have to say people who bring in their tax work late. Don’t do it. Get in early. Get in early.

What is one TV or Netflix show you never miss?

This is Us.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I think I’d like to be creative and decorative like in a Joanna Gaines-type way. Like, take a room and totally transform it. That is totally not something I am good at.

What can BPW do to support you in your career?

I guess I kind of mentioned this with the other, “Why did I join BPW?” I guess to just find a way to meet other people that are very similar to myself, have similar goals, and that sort of thing. But also a way to give back to the community a little bit. I know we’ve been talking about some of our nonprofit stuff and getting involved there. So I guess creating a network of people that you admire and are similar to and that you can bounce ideas off of each other and that sort of thing. I haven’t been here very long, but hopefully in the future. There’s a lot of good stuff going on.

Can you give us a brief introduction of who you are and what you do at your current organization?

I’m a National Marketing Director with The JuicePlus Company. My passion is to educate people/families on the importance of nutrition and specifically the power of fruits and vegetables. I love providing a solution to a problem most of us have, which is eating enough fruits and vegetables daily. I also believe that women should have the ability to be home with their kids and have a thriving career. I love helping women launch and build their at home virtual business around their families lives.

Why did you join BPW?

When I first moved here 3 years ago, I was searching for a way to be around like-minded empowered women. I met Marcy Stahl at a networking event and she inviting me to a meeting. I loved it and join that night.

What hobbies/interests do you have outside of work?

I love to workout out especially outside – running, tennis, boot camp. I also love to watch my kids basketball games. Most weekends you will find me in a gym.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet?

Oprah – I think she is an amazing role model and inspiration.

What is your favorite superhero and why?

Again, 2 boys and the first thing that came to mind was the Transformers and I just remember watching them and they all had their own different powers but together they could stand together and pretty much conquer anyone and so kind of made my think of women when we band together we can do anything together.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

How much time do we have? I think probably the biggest thing for me would be to be authentic with your word. I have a hard time with people telling me that they are doing something and then don’t follow through with it.

What would you do for career – if you were not doing this?

This will come as a shocker but I would be a basketball coach.

What is your favorite game/board game?

Cribbage - I grew up in a family that played a lot of cards if I was really being truthful, I would say poker but with my kids I don’t play poker with them at the dinner table.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

I would love to be a good photographer.

What can BPW do to support you in your business?

I would say that in the business I am in it is all about awareness and understanding. Everyone in the room knows of fruits and vegetables are good for us so just having that good understanding you might be more apt to see the people that are looking for ways to improve their health and introduce me. Or even knowing other women that may also be looking for a way to get home and be with your kids and having a career and family. How did you end up in your current career?

In college I had the privilege of playing basketball in Europe and my body broke down because I was I was not nutritionally fit even though I was physically fit, I was not nutritionally fit. Came back to the States and had a great career starting off with Reebok, traveled the world and landed in high tech recruiting. I did that for about 10 years and just been working outside of the house in raising kids was fine for a while until it wasn’t – long commute, working for a boss, not having time for you and then I thought there has to be a way for women to be able to have a thriving career and be home with our kids, why do we have to choose. I looked for 2 years and could not find anything and then a friend called me one day and said I found what you are looking for and I said – no you didn’t because I had been looking for 2 years. Fortunately, she was persistent and I went and took a look and just absolutely fell in love with the company. Left corporate, cut my family’s income in half and got to work.

Who are you and what do you do for your current organization?

I am the marketing manager for Carolina Ale House. We have 30 locations in 6 states, so I handle their brand, any brand issues, public relations, corporate philanthropy, and catchall for anything else they possibly come up with.

Why did you join BPW?

I got to meet with Allison Cohan. I moved here about 2.5 years ago and one of the things I was really looking forward to was reconnecting with women that were similar in mindset, professionally in their career, and also just like to have a really good time and really just to meet different people and to learn new and different things. I interviewed, if you will, a bunch of different organizations and this one felt the best, it felt like I was at home and was welcomed right away and I had a really crazy schedule and somehow got put on the board and on committees. I know Allison would say, “No”. So that’s why I joined BPW.

What are your favorite hobbies or interests outside of work?

Work is my first hobby, but I really love to cook - so much so that I will go to friends’ houses for parties I’m not invited to and cook for them… and then leave. But I really love cooking, I love traveling, and just exploring where I live. I think there’s so much that is around our community that we don’t even scratch the surface on and I love trying new things. I love it.

What is your favorite superhero and why?

Wonder Woman! I didn’t even have to think twice about this question. I wish I could understand why but I’ve loved Wonder Woman since I was a little girl. But I’ve been politically motivated my entire life, which is why I’m on the Legislative Committee, and was in politics for a long time. But I think that empowerment piece and that women can be strong and they can fight for what they believe in is just as strong of a power as knocking through walls and shooting things and whatever else some other superheroes do.

What chores do you hate doing?

Laundry. Hate it, hate it, hate it. Everything about laundry - putting in the washer, putting it in the dryer, folding - I hate laundry. Hate it.

What would you do for a career if you weren’t doing what you’re doing now?

I have always wanted to own my own event planning company. I love entertaining and what I love the most about it is seeing people happy. Whether it’s walking through the door, giving them really good food, giving them a lot of drinks (because I think that’s vital) but I’ve always really wanted to own my own event planning company and it’s still a dream goal of mine and I think one day it’ll come true. I think.

How do you define success?

I actually had to think a bit about that one. Because I think success is dependent on your life and where you are in your career. For me, success is being happy. I have always said that the day I stop enjoying my job is the day I stop going to my job. (But obviously with giving notice and all that stuff.) But finding something new - because if you can’t enjoy what you do, why are you doing it? And I think jobs are a necessity and you need a paycheck and you need to put food on the table for our families, but for me success is finding the career and the path that you want to be on and enjoying it. And some days are gonna suck, you know that, but if overall you can be really excited, and you wake up and you know that’s where you want to be, then for me, that is what defines my success and really gets me going.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

To play the piano. I’m so not musically inclined and I’m desperate to learn to play any single instrument and the piano has been like my baby that I have wanted to do. I just haven’t done it. I just really need to and somebody, anybody wants to teach me, I’m ready and willing. I’m ready! I can’t sing, I can’t draw - I’m not very good at that stuff. But I could try!

What is the coolest (or most important) trend that you see today?

So I couldn’t come up with anything cool, but there’s a lot of trends I really hate. Like I don’t understand why crushed velvet has come back? If you love crushed velvet, I’m so sorry - and I’m a believer in all things - but I just don’t understand it. And I spent an hour with my girlfriend who came to visit me - I just moved into a new house a few weekends ago and we talked about culottes. I don’t understand why things have come back. So I couldn’t find any cool trends, but all I could think of was ones I really don’t like right now.

Check out this blog post from Ronisha Nanjiani. She held a bake sale at our BPW meeting on May 24th. She baked homemade chocolate cupcakes and Nankatai’s (Indian cookies). Through the generous members of BPW -she collected $170 that she could use to buy school supplies for underprivileged children in Charlotte. Way to Ronisha!!!

There are 54 women running for office in NC and over 19 of them running for the NC House of Representatives for the first time in NC. Sydney Batch, JD is one of them. She is running for District 37, one of the few seats without an incumbent. Sydney just came from marching and supporting educators and teachers in downtown Raleigh to join the members of the BPW Legislative Committee for coffee and chatting.

Members of the Legislative Committee had an opportunity to talk to the mother of two and family law attorney, about her support of equal pay, education, livable wages and the challenges that she is overcoming running for office for the first time.

"Our meeting was delightful. Sydney is inspiring and based on our conversation, I am convinced that if elected, she is going to be a strong champion for women in NC." said Sterling Fulton, Co-chair of the Legislative Committee. Sterling, who is seated in between, April Chester and Sydney, is also pictured with Janet Chester, and Gordana Vujec. Marcy Stahl, co-president, attended the meeting as well but was not included in the picture.

Our Friend, Lydia Ostrishko

Lydia, a former member of the Triangle Club, passed away on May 24, just past her 61^st birthday. Lydia had many health problems over the years but more recently her renal cancer returned causing a quick decline. Besides her dear friends, Lydia is survived by her beloved Bella (Bassett hound/pointer mix), Ken (the love of her life), as well her father and two brothers.

Lydia and I have been friends for more than 20 years. Over the years, we traveled, laughed, cried, and enjoyed many wonderful times. She always said I was her sister from another mother. It warmed by heart as I am an only child who never experienced biological siblings. I believe what describes Lydia most is that she was one tough cookie. This was a lady who was strong in her faith, fiercely loyal, would give you the shirt from her back, and supported her friends when they needed an ear.

Lydia was indeed the definition of a workaholic. She enjoyed working and contributing. At age 50, she had at last found her calling in Human Resources and returned to college at Campbell University graduating manga cum laude. Most recently before her health took a turn for the worse, Lydia carried on this work at the State Library of North Carolina in Raleigh. Her attention to detail and understanding of intricate policies and processes made her a valuable asset.

We will miss her greatly.

BPW TRIANGLE – What a Ride!

In March 2016, in the wee early hours of a Saturday morning, Marcy Stahl and I gathered a few hardy souls to discuss ways that we could energize and build-up & out this chapter. Some of ladies were familiar with BPW, and some had never heard of our organization. It took several of these meetings, over the course of many months to assemble enough women to say “I’m in”. With complete optimism, hopefulness and a blurry vision where we wanted to go, we began to lay out a plan.

We determined fairly quickly that we wanted “FUN,” and this needed to be intertwined with learning, professional & personal growth, and that we had welcomed everyone. In laymen terms, we wanted cupcakes & champagne, but it had to come with high-level, high-quality speakers & learning. Plus, we wanted all members and guests to feel like they belonged; so much so, that they joined our chapter immediately and knew that their participation was vital in helping us grow.

Now, I’m not sure if it was the three tiered dessert table at Prestonwood Country Club, the various social events, or just our pure perseverance of our leadership team & members, but BPW Triangle has experienced fantastic results over the past two years. We have more members than ever, membership engagement is up, we have added additional programming (yes, some has worked and some has not), many of our members have stepped into leadership positions or found various ways to enhance our chapter, and our meeting attendance has soared; plus, each year we have increased the amount of money we have given out in educational scholarships. The results in just two years has been incredible… however, all of this pales in comparison to the connections and relationships that have been built between our members.

During the past two years, we have experienced so much together. Our members have welcomed babies and some have faced an empty nest; we have said goodbye to Dr. Lois Frazier, our longest and dearest member, and some of us have said our farewells to parents or loved ones; we have celebrated professional and personal successes, and we have wiped the tears of those that have experienced job loss, divorce and disappointments… The list goes on and on.

What has emerged is much more than a group of professional women who gather to hear speakers. Our chapter extends way past professional aspirations and has blended into our personal lives. I particularly love the picture from our last Holiday party, as it encompasses who we are - obviously we are very serious about Star Wars (or at least support the members that are); we want to have good time & connect with each other, and it is important that we include our family and friends.

What started as a few women with a vague vision of energizing our chapter, has become so much more than we ever dreamed or anticipated…. We are a community, a force… a TRIBE. It is with some sadness, but with tremendous gratitude that our two year journey as Co-Presidents is coming to close. However, there are a lot of amazing women ready to take the torch and run with it. Marcy and I will be next to you and behind you, cheering and supporting you, as you continue to grow, refine and alter the vision of our chapter to meet the needs of our membership…. Our community.

Next week, Marcy and I will thank our TRIBE leaders and members for being on this crazy, exhausting, amazing adventure with us, please know that we left nothing on the table as we slide into home screaming…. WOW!! What a Ride! Now keep running….

Realty Store is a simulation game in which students identify their career interests, research a specific career, and receive a mock checkbook with the monthly income entered for the specific career. Students then visit booths manned by community members at which they pay their monthly bills.

At each booth, the students make decisions concerning the standard of living they’ll assume. For example, at the housing booth (manned by a Realtor), students decide if they want to pay for a one-bedroom efficiency apartment or a five-bedroom home.

Following the Reality Store simulation, students discuss the impact of the educational choices they make today on their ability to 1) enter various occupations and 2) support various standards of living in their future.

How it works: 2 volunteers are assigned at each of 10 stations. Their job is to guide students in making choices and helping them to make adjustments to their check register. We need volunteers! Prior experience with Reality Store is not necessary. It is an easy job and so rewarding!

Minutes BPW/Raleigh Board Meeting 8/11/2015

Attending: Jenine Atoji, Linda Karolak, Marcy Stahl

Meeting began at 6:20pm. Marcy read the minutes; a motion to accept the minutes was approved.

Old Business:

· Reminding members about the Birthday Bonus: Jenine will send out an email about this.
· Sharing Member for a Day cards: let’s have one Board members at each table who can share these cards and their purpose with members. Susan – please bring the cards to the Aug 24 dinner.
· BPW’s FB/Twitter account info – resides only w/ Lea-Ann right now. We discussed the desirability for Jenine to have that info as well.
· Do we have a sponsor for August meeting? Bellingrath family law? Marcy will call Alexandra Castle to check on this.

Treasurer Report/Membership – no update.

Jenine to send out reminder emails for future Board meetings.

Programs: No update. Jenine will contact Amelia to confirm whether we’ve got Carrie Peele for Oct.

For the August dinner meeting, we’ll follow our usual agenda:

· 5:30-6 regis & networking;
· 6 – welcome and seating;
· 6:15 dinner served;
· 6:50-6:55 speaker begins.
· 7:40 – announcements and birthday bonus drawing. Reinstitute table topics. Going forward: having program person who’s coordinating with speaker ask speaker for possible topics.

We want one board member/table – no clumping. Karen Boardman will help Linda w/ hospitality. Linda will help us get spread out and unclumped.

For our Sept lunch, the topic is social media. Danielle Baldwin and Lisa Sullivan of Tweet Divas will speak on how to market yourself/your business with social media. Danielle runs Word Camp RDU. Can we do a survey through Wild Apricot or Survey Monkey? Jenine will check on Wild Apricot. Marcy will draft a survey.

Mentorship: Marcy is willing to do a repeat of Sonja Neiger’s Mentorship meeting. Jenine is in discussion with a couple other ladies who might lead meeting on this.

New membership lunches – very helpful to learn what new members want and young new members like mentoring!

For our October meeting, we might tie in with Natl Business Women’s week. Would like to do a mentorship program then. Or something to do with work-life balance/integration. Someone can Google this topic to find local speakers.

November – we do have Brier Creek for lunch.

We discussed a couple scholarship fundraising ideas. 1) Do another Silent Auction for fundraising, in spring? Who can organize this? 2) Possible Kickstarter campaign to raise scholarship money in honor of Lois’ birthday and long involvement w/ BPW? That is easy and appealing to younger members. If we pursue this, we want to doublecheck that Lois is OK with this.

Meeting pricing: From Sept forward, $30 early bird/$35 regular for dinner, due to increased Brier Creek costs ($22/dinner). They’re keeping the corkage fee at $5/bottle and may be willing to store a case. They’ll charge us a small fee to receive and hold a package if we have wine delivered there.

We add new members when our members talk to people they know. Keep mentioning the power and importance of inviting guests and talking about BPW to colleagues! Do this at monthly meetings, consistently. This is our #1 way to bring in new members, which is what keeps our organization growing.

Meeting began at 6:15 PM. We waived reading of the minutes.
Old business: no old business
New business:
Members will bring ideas for fund-raising to next board meeting. Note: Cindy Loudermmilk will donate baskets should we need them for a silent auction.
We will publicize birthday bonus and make it a priority, as it supports our scholarship.
Cyn will design a simple new logo for us.
Board meetings have been changed to the 2nd Tuesday of the month at Earthfare.
Note: A motion form is needed for all motions, so we should keep these on hand.
Membership (Susan and Jackie): Currently 51 active members, 11 recently lapsed members. Susan and Jackie will place follow up calls to lapsed members. Chairs are working with Nicolette to have a recruitment/orientation/social wine tasting event in the fall. Nicolette will report on this in September and we will set the date then. Chairs will be talking to specific members about sharing “member for a day cards”. [We have 100 cards and 22 new member pins on hand.]
Susan will send copy of new member registration form to Anita, Jackie, and Jenine. Susan will fill this out for all new members since mid-April. Anita will send dues to State for the new members, as needed.
Social (Nicolette): Jenine is buying a cake for Lois Frazier’s birthday to be presented at August meeting. We will take donations for this. Nicolette is working on a wine tasting (or wine and cheese) event to be held in the fall. Location discussed is “Total wine” at North Hills. Room is free, priced per person. Also mentioned- free room at Triangle Town Center.
We determined that Kathryn Noel has access to our social media.
Logistics: We decided to sign contract with Brier Creek for September through May 2016. Prices have increased to $22/dinner and $15/lunch. (Formerly $17/10.) The August 24th
meeting will be at Cambridge Suites. We will raise member prices for dinner to $30 early bird/$35 regular member or guests. New lunch price: $20 for all.
The November, February, and September meetings will be lunch meetings. Jenine is checking with Brier Creek for November lunch availability. The Christmas party is Saturday, Dec.5. The board accepted the following calendar: Sept 22, October 20, November 17, January 26, February 23, March 22, April 26, and May 24.
We decided to have wine at dinner meetings. Amelia can get a discount. Brier creek may let us store case there. We will sell tickets at registration for wine as we have done in the past. There will be no wine at lunch. Brier Creek staff will open the bottles for us as part of the corkage fee.
Finance (Anita) Anita will look into liability insurance prices. Morrisville Chamber renewal is in December. We have not decided whether to renew. Anita will prepare a budget.
Programs (Alexandra) Alexandra will ask Bellingrath Family Law to sponsor our August meeting. Cost is $35/member sponsor or $100 for other sponsors. We have confirmed Danielle Baldwin as speaker for our September lunch meeting. Amelia and Jenine have information re: prospective speakers and will share with Alexandra. Carrie Peel is being pursued for October.
Marketing (Ashley) Jackie Brown offered to assist with marketing.
Legislative chair (Tovah) We suggested Tovah get information from State Legislative Chair. Suggestions: Post a blurb on the web-site, blog, or email members with events or information of interest. Michelle Evans is a great resource in regard to local legislative events.
Webmaster Jenine is our current web-master, until we can find another.

RALEIGH, N.C.—April 8, 2015—Amelia Davey, owner and CEO of When In White, a wedding planning company in Raleigh and Charlotte, has been chosen as the 2015 BPW/Raleigh Young Careerist, a competition sponsored by the Business and Professional Women of Raleigh.

“I'm very excited about being chosen as Raleigh's BPW Young Careerist. I feel this recognition will introduce me to some exciting new mentors, connections, and opportunities,” Davey said. “At the age of 23, BPW provides me with a new light on the empowerment of being a female entrepreneur. I look forward to seeing what great things the future has to hold.”

Davey was one of four candidates in this year’s competition. The other young women who participated in the 2015 Young Careerist program were: Lindsey Harrison, founder of SocialCents Media; Maria Isabel Rego, a volunteer at OHEALL; and Miranda Volborth, lead copywriter in NC State’s IES department.
Each candidate presented a speech that answered a topic prompt. Davey’s presentation focused on women’s challenge to find balance between their professional and personal lives and “have it all.” Candidates also participated in roundtable discussions and were each interviewed by a panel of judges including Monica Barnes, community affairs director at WTVD; Pattie Hartin, production manager at WTVD; and Jeff Shaw, director of communications at the N.C. Justice Center.

“This event allows young women the opportunity to engage with a diverse group of women and forge strong bonds within the community,” said Cyn Macgregor, BPW/Raleigh president. “It gives our club a significant ‘pay it forward’ moment.”

Davey’s business specializes in Day-Of and Full-Service wedding planning. She also serves as Vice President of Women in Networking. She will also be invited to compete at the state level Young Careerist competition in May.

Each year, the North Carolina Business and Professional Women’s Foundation awards scholarships to deserving women to help them in their pursuit of higher education. The scholarships are awarded based on the following Eligibility Requirements:

1. Be currently enrolled in either an accredited community college or an accredited four year college or university in the freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year or for graduate study.

2. Require financial assistance to obtain goals.

3. Have a definite career plan.

BPW/Raleigh scholarships are not awarded to the same person in two consecutive years. All candidates must submit a completed BPW/Raleigh scholarship application.

Current high school students are not eligible to apply

Making Connections

We are super excited to launch our first Making Connections event on January 15. If you are signed up, be sure to preview the materials we will be using in the workshop. Although this program is new for our group, the content and instructors are not. BPW/Raleigh members Sonja Neiger and Karen Warner are seasoned professional women who are expert trainers. We are very fortunate to have landed their help AND we are in very good hands!

This workshop will be especially beneficial to women in the workplace who want to change careers, get a promotion, learn how to ask for what you want, set goals to achieve success and get the inside track to doing business.

More chocolate AND set reasonable goals this year

Ah…another year has come and gone. As I reflect on the past year and look toward a new one, I am struck by how depressing new years’ resolutions really are. Frankly, they feel more like punishment for my previous year’s shortcomings rather than positive goals (lose 10 pounds, watch less reality TV, eat more chia seeds, whatever those are).

Let’s make a pact that 2015 will be less punitive and more constructive. One way I aim to achieve this is by setting reasonable goals, writing them down, and devising ways to reach them. If you’re like me, the odds are good that at least one of your goals involves your career (for me, it’s finding a job after I graduate from grad school). One of the most fruitful, yet seemingly most dreaded, ways to reach career goals is through networking.

The first step in networking is to get over your fear of it, revise your understanding of what it is, and relearn how it works.

Let’s review what networking is NOT. It is not insincere, it does not require lots of fake smiling and fake compliments, and most importantly, it is not difficult. Rather, networking is an intentional and thoughtful way to generate a list of contacts with whom you share a mutually beneficial relationship. Networking is about connecting with other professionals for the long-term, not making lifelong friends. And guess what? That’s perfectly okay.

Women tend to think that we are either friends with someone or we have no relationship with them. This is unfortunate because so much of our personal growth and learning occurs collectively with other women. Furthermore, we get so busy and consumed with playing multiple roles that we tend to view forging new relationships as a low priority goal. Worse yet, when we find ourselves in need of a network because of a job change or something else, we freeze. “I haven’t talked with Karen in a while. I had better not reach out to her.” Why do we make that choice? What is it about networking that is so terrifying?

Ladies, let’s stop the madness and agree that it is okay to connect with other women and leverage those connections as needed. Men do this all the time. Men have no problem calling some guy they met 10 years ago at a conference about a possible job connection. As long as we are still paid less and disturbingly underrepresented in C-level positions in this country, we must develop, maintain, and leverage connections with one another. Our careers depend on it.

Put this on your 2015 resolutions list: cultivate and nurture a networking list. Starting in January, begin connecting with women in your industry, industries you are interested in, advocacy or interest groups, etc. As you meet new women, find out if they are on LinkedIn, get their business cards or address, and find a way to connect with each person at least once per year. “Connections” can be as simple as a quick email, social media update, holiday card, or birthday card. We have to get over the idea that our female relationships are all or nothing. We can and should develop meaningful, reciprocal networking relationships without the pressures of friendship. Let’s make (and keep) a resolution we can feel good about.

This event is designed to help you develop and execute a networking plan that works for you. The workshop facilitators will provide all attendees with an interactive workbook designed to help you make the most of your connections and ultimately, enhance your networking efforts.

Reality Store (SM) Needs Your Help!

BPW/Raleigh is proud to sponsor Reality Store SM, a curriculum for middle school students. This is our 10th year presenting Reality Store SM at Shepherd Middle School in Durham, NC. It is being held on Friday, February 13, 2015 (approx. 8am-11:30am).

The program is offered in a game format where students learn the “reality” of a monthly family budget and the value of making appropriate choices in planning for career, family and their education. Students receive a mock checkbook with the monthly income entered for the specific career. Students then visit booths manned by community members at which they pay their monthly bills. At each booth, the students make decisions concerning the standard of living they’ll assume. For example, at the housing booth, students decide if they want to pay for a one-bedroom efficiency apartment or a five-bedroom home.

Following the Reality Store SM simulation, students discuss the impact of the educational choices they make today on their ability to 1.) enter various occupations and 2.) support various standards of living in their future.

Volunteer on February 13, 2015 - If so, here's how it works: 2 volunteers are assigned at each of 10 stations. Volunteers guide students in making choices and helping them to make adjustments to their check register. Prior experience with Reality Store SM is not necessary. It is an easy job and so rewarding.

Connections - providing opportunities for professional women to develop learning relationships with one other

We’ve all heard the old adage: It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. That may be true, but who you know can also help you know a whole lot more.

In the not-so-distant past, women were told “Find a mentor to get ahead.” We all know that Mentors, traditionally, are the seasoned sages guiding younger protégés along. Mentors invest time and energy into passing along their wisdom; Protégés soak up every bit of it. The problem with this model is that it assumes only one person in the relationship has something to offer – the Mentor. It also requires a significant investment of the Mentor’s time for the protégé to derive maximum value. Finally, with this model, it’s almost as if we are creating a boundary; once you have “arrived,” you don’t need mentoring any longer; you should switch and assume the mentoring role and are no longer the protégé. What if there’s a different way?

The Mentoring Committee of BPW, Raleigh, thinks there is a different way – dare we say, a better way. In 2014/15, we are expanding and re-branding the Mentoring committee to focus on Connections. Instead of mentoring, which carries a heavy connotation, our focus is providing opportunities for professional women to develop learning relationships with one other. We believe that all women in our organization, whether seasoned professionals in industry, ambitious entrepreneurs, dedicated veterans, or new graduates, have knowledge and skills that are useful to share. We also ascribe to lifelong learning – the idea that all of us have something to learn, no matter how experienced we are in our careers.

Research shows that Connections are especially important to women because we derive more learning through relationships than men do. When a woman receives a bit of advice from a trusted person, she is likely to learn and apply the lesson; conversely, a man is more likely to learn through experiencing a situation. In a real world context, women do better when primed for a learning experience with nuggets of advice, like “When you jump in the pool, move your arms and legs so you don’t drown!” Sure, we have to jump in the pool to learn, but we’re more apt to absorb useful advice from others and put it into action. Men, generally, don’t learn in this way. They say “yea, yea, I got this,” jump into the pool, and figure it out (quickly, before they drown).

Does this ring true in your experience of how women learn? If so, the implications for your own learning are significant and optimistic. It means that you have a greater capacity to leverage learning from trusted advisors. Collecting and applying wisdom from others not only develops your confidence before you jump into new experiences, but it also helps you avoid the more painful option – trial and error. Learning through relationships also means that you don’t necessarily need to look for people who have more experienced than you are, which can be especially difficult if some of our long-term members; you simply need to find people you trust who have something to offer that you value. Likewise, if you are junior in your career, you have learning to offer others. You don’t need to wait until you accumulate years of credibility to share your valuable insights.

As we move into 2014/15, think about what is missing that would accelerate your career. Think, too, of what you can give back. In 2014/15, it’s all about Connections – to learn, to contribute, through learning relationships with each other.

Susan Land Chief Engineer with the U.S. Missile Defense Speaks

We are thrilled that Susan (Kathy) Land accepted our invitation to speak at our co-sponsored event with IEEE October 28th. She has more than 25 years of industry experience in the application of software engineering methodologies, the management of information systems, and leadership of software development teams. Ms. Land is currently assigned as the Chief Engineer and Deputy Program Manager for C2BMC Spiral 8.2 Product Development supporting Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Command, Control, Battle Management, & Communications (C2BMC) in Huntsville, AL.

Susan will speak about her experiences as a woman working in the computing and defense industries. She will discuss leadership development as a lifelong journey, the challenges and opportunities for women in industries where they might be a minority group, and the empowerment we should all embrace to affect positive change.

Susan is featured in a film Pioneers in Skirts produced by BPW members Lea-Ann Berst and directed by her daughter Ashley Maria. Ashley will be at October's event, so be sure to meet her, and ask about her film!, if you plan to attend this not-to-be missed event.

Recently board members took action by working together to conceive a member survey to understand better the wants and needs of our BPW Raleigh club. Based on the survey results the board voted to update programming for the 2014/15 year.

Some of the updates include:

Evening AND afternoon programs.
Programs that focus on skill building, facilitated networking and signature events.
Plated dinner AND buffet with expanded menu to meet dietary needs.
Cash bar (wine only) at evening events.
Increase of social events to build community.
Varied pricing.
Varied locations.
