President's Note - August
Dear Members & Friends,
It is in the small lessons in life that we grow… if we are willing to look for them.
During a recent lunch with our August speaker, Michele Lewis Reeves, and a few BPW Triangle members & guests, one theme that continued to pop-up was that our chapter is competing for members with the other women’s organizations in our area.
Michele challenged us … and I’m paraphrasing here: .... You’ve got to STOP this line of thinking. Each of these groups has a niche for their members. Stop looking at other women groups as competition. We need each other ~ Women Build Women.
As you can imagine, we all were slightly taken aback. Please do not get me wrong; we sincerely appreciated her calling us out and highlighting this well-known stereotype, with obviously more than a nugget of truth attached to our conversation.
For me, this was one of those a-ha moments. Of course, I intuitively know this is wrong… I’m a Women Studies Major … I’ve written papers about women seeing each other as rivals and not as allies! And although I like to think I’m aware of this phenomenon, it happened right under my nose, in a conversation that I was actively engaged in, and I didn’t see it happen!
This got all of us thinking, why do we see each other as competitors? How do we get this stop this within ourselves and our community? It was clear that Michele must come and talk to our chapter about the power of women coming together and why we need a variety of groups that support women. She has firsthand knowledge of this and has been a longtime advocate for women as the Head of Global Organization Effectiveness for SAS and the owner of Grow by Design Coaching & Consulting.
We are thrilled and honored to have Michele Lewis Reeves as our Keynote Speaker for our August 25th meeting. Come join us, and reaffirm that we are all here to help support, promote & empower each other.
