Kelly Shatat, a creative type at heart, turned to designing jewelry as an outlet to fill the creative void left by her career in pharmacy. She got her start in the jewelry business by making and selling her designs at a Junior League holiday show in Greenville, NC where she sold out and took orders from several local boutiques. She began traveling around the Carolinas, calling on
boutiques, hosting trunk shows and opening up new wholesale accounts.

She continued to make jewelry on her sofa at home, but as demand increased, she moved production to her dining room table, and then to her garage, at which at the time she recruited friends and pharmacy technicians to help. Finally she outgrew her garage, moved production to a studio in downtown Apex and hired full-time help. 

One of Kelly's first big hits in 2003 was the ever-popular, hand-tied pearl necklace, which she made special by offering a variety on interchangeable ribbons. Next, the collection was expanded into lightweight filigree earrings and vintage-inspired necklaces and bracelets. Then the company's signature acrylic monogram necklace was born - a piece that remains as one of the brand's bestsellers today. The first of its kind and available in 32 acrylic colors, Moon and Lola's acrylic monogram necklace was featured in Lucky Magazine in November 2011, and sales skyrocketed. Kelly quickly realized that in order for Moon and Lola to reach its full potential she needed to jump in with both feet and devote 100% of her time and energy to building the Moon and Lola brand.

The brand has been seen in over 1,000 boutiques and specialty retailers including Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, and 7 company-owned retail brick and mortar stores as well as on social and moonandlola.com. In 2014 and 2015, Moon and Lola was featured on Oprah's Favorite Things list which led to national brand recognition. 

Today, Kelly is excited to be celebrating Moon and Lola's 20th year in business. After the many changes in her life, the world and the retail climate she and a small team of hardworking and inspiring women are pivoting toward this new online driven world.
